New Year’s Trundle & Lunch

Signing-on is from 9:30 am. Upon arrival, you can purchase coffee or tea for £2.50.
Cars will leave from 10:30 am onwards at one-minute intervals. There will be a relaxed drive through parts of Somerset with historical write-ups along the way. Please do not return to the Old Down Inn for lunch before 12:00 noon. Lunch will be served at 1:00 pm.

Stepping Back into HistoryThe Old Down Inn is a fascinating building built in 1640 and full of history. The front door takes you into a wide hallway and straight into a lovely old polished oak bar. The breadth of the hallway reflects the original archway access to the inn’s yard. This was a posting house on the main Bath to Wells coaching route and dates from the time it was built in 1640. It acquired considerable importance in the great mail coaching era (circa 1790-1840) as a Post Town, the equivalent of our present head post office, having its own postmark and receiving the mail from the packet port of Falmouth, as well as inland mail. The inn assumed such importance that when the first Bradshaw’s railway guide appeared in 1840, Old Down was the only Inn shown in the whole country.
